Typical Phuket ranges this week: 1,300-1,900 THB for a half-day or budget group island trip, 1,800-2,900 THB for a full-day Phi Phi or Phang Nga speedboat tour, 8,500-26,000 THB for a private speedboat charter per boat, 30,000-80,000 THB for private catamarans and yachts.

Maya Bay: the rules that change your itinerary

Maya Bay, the beach from the film The Beach, is protected and its rules catch tourists off guard every season:

• It closes every year from 1 August to 30 September for reef recovery. Tours still run Phi Phi that season, just without Maya Bay.
• The park fee is 400 THB for foreigners. Some tours include it, some collect it on the spot. Ask before you pay for a tour, and compare tours on whether the fee is inside the price.
• No swimming in the bay, and boats cannot land on the beach. Visitors arrive by shuttle from piers on Phi Phi Leh, with a quota of about 300 people at a time and a short viewing window.
• Timing beats price. The bay is emptiest around 07:00 and late afternoon. An early-departure tour (some operators run 06:00 pick-ups for exactly this) is worth the extra cost over the cheapest 08:30 coach tour.

What a standard Phi Phi day tour from Phuket includes

The typical full-day speedboat itinerary: hotel pickup 07:30-08:30, transfer to a pier (Chalong, Leam Nga or Rassada are the common ones), speedboat to Phi Phi Don around 10:00, then Pileh Lagoon for swimming, buffet lunch at Ton Sai Bay, Monkey Beach and the Viking Cave (viewed from the water; the cave itself is protected), Maya Bay, a snorkeling or beach stop at the Khai or Bida islands, and back in Phuket by 17:00. Included as standard: hotel transfers, lunch, snorkeling mask and fins, an English-speaking guide and accident insurance. The national park fee is the one line that varies between operators, so check it. Ferry-cruiser tours (slower, calmer, cheaper-feeling) follow the same sights with more boat time and less speedboat bounce, and suit families and seasick-prone travelers.

Booking safely: three checks before you pay

1. Check the TAT license. Legitimate operators publish a Tourism Authority of Thailand license number on their site (for example 34/02912, 31/01423, 34/00586). Street kiosk tours often show none.
2. Ask what is NOT included: national park fee, hotel pickup zones outside your area, and whether the Maya Bay stop is guaranteed for your travel dates.
3. Book direct and pay a small deposit. Several Phuket operators take a 300 THB deposit online or on WhatsApp and the balance on the boat, which is also how you avoid the commission built into aggregator prices.

Season note: the Andaman side of Phuket runs its best sea conditions roughly November to April. From May to October the sea can be rougher, some speedboat itineraries swap islands for calmer bays, and the Similan Islands far north close annually for about mid-May to mid-October. Weather cancellations are normal and reputable operators refund or reschedule.
