Kata and Karon sit directly south of Patong and offer a noticeably more relaxed pace. The two beaches are separated by a small headland and share a similar character - wide sand, clear water and a mix of independent restaurants and resort hotels without the intensity of Patong.
Kata Beach is the smaller and more characterful of the two, known for its beginner surf break at the southern end. Several surf schools operate here from May to October when the swell is consistent. Outside surf season the sea is calm and excellent for swimming.
Karon Beach is longer and less crowded, with a wide sandy strip and a shallow gradient that makes it safe for children. The main drag has restaurants, bars and shops without being overwhelming.
The Kata Noi viewpoint, perched above the headland between Kata and Kata Noi beaches, is one of the most photographed spots on the island and worth the climb at sunset.
Yes. Kata Beach has a reliable beginner surf break at the southern end, most active from May to October. Several surf schools on the beach offer lessons for all levels.
Kata is approximately 8 kilometres south of Patong - about 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or motorbike.
Yes. Karon Beach has a gentle slope and shallow entry making it one of the safer beaches on the island for children outside of monsoon months.
Kata is smaller, busier and better known for surf. Karon is longer, quieter and has a wider beach. Both are great for swimming in high season.
Yes. Both areas have a solid selection of restaurants, convenience stores, ATMs, pharmacies and dive operators.
