The shared-versus-private math: a shared berth costs 2,450-3,000 THB per person, while a private boat runs 13,000-15,900 THB. At four or more anglers, private costs about the same per head and you choose the spot, the pace and the return time.
Chalong Pier is the hub: nearly every deep-sea operator departs from there, with some also using Ao Po marina and Rawai beach. A standard shared trip includes rod, reel, bait, life jackets, lunch and drinks, with an English-speaking crew; trolling for pelagic fish in the morning and bottom fishing around the islands after lunch. The Racha run (8 hours to Racha Yai and Racha Noi) is the classic day: clear water, reef fishing plus marlin, tuna and wahoo on the drop-offs. The newer style is the sashimi charter: whatever you catch gets prepared on board, which is why operators like Sabai Tour and Beluga market the lunch as the prize.
