Rawai and Nai Harn occupy the southernmost tip of Phuket and have a distinctly different character from the resort areas further north. This is where a large part of Phuket's expat community has settled, attracted by the local feel, the seafood, the proximity to the sea and the distance from tourist crowds.
Rawai is not a swimming beach - the shallow foreshore means the sea retreats significantly at low tide. What it does have is the best seafood setup on the island. The row of vendors along the waterfront lets you choose your fish, crab, prawns or lobster fresh from the boat, then take it to the restaurants behind to have it cooked to order. It is a Phuket institution.
Nai Harn Beach, a short drive around the headland, is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island - a horseshoe bay with clear water, excellent swimming and a fraction of the crowds of Patong. Beloved by long-term residents and in-the-know visitors alike.
