Phuket Old Town is the cultural and historical heart of the island. The streets are lined with Sino-Portuguese shophouses built in the late 19th century, many now home to independent cafes, art galleries, boutique guesthouses and some of the best local food on the island.
Thalang Road and Soi Romanee are the most photogenic streets - narrow lanes with peeling painted facades, bougainvillea spilling over balconies and small shrines tucked into alcoves. The area rewards slow walking. You will find things that do not appear on any map.
The Sunday Walking Street (Lard Yai) runs the full length of Thalang Road every Sunday from 17:00 to 22:00. It is one of the biggest and most popular markets on the entire island - street food, local crafts, live music and a genuine community atmosphere. It runs rain or shine, with covered sections throughout. Bring cash, bring the kids, go hungry.
Day-to-day, most tourist-facing shops and restaurants are open seven days a week. Money exchange counters are available on the main streets. Parking is tight - the area is best explored on foot or by motorbike.
